Log in to Reply Erik Norberg says: April 11, 2020 at 8:26 pm When Oprah talked about the spiritual moment with Tom Cruise, my mind went to a talk show in Sweden, and Norway called Skavlan (same name as the program leader). He, Skavlan, had invited a man who had spent eleven years in a hole in the ground in prison in the US. According to him, he was innocent, which also was later confirmed. This man, 74 years old, said that the best thing that could have happened to him was to be sentenced to the punishment he had gone through, because of the spiritual moments and lessons he had in the prison cell. It seemed as he became almost enlightened during that time and experience. What I am telling was on TV a long time ago, but this is how I remember it… Loading... In the beginning of this video she's telling Ivy that her purpose doesnt come from a concept but from a feeling. Then towards the end of this video she contradicts her understanding and says she got frustrated because she didnt understand and Eckhart had to tell her that its not through conceptual thinking. Dont get me wrong, i like Oprah but i dont really feel like she really KNOWS as she sometimes claims here to otherwise Eckhart wouldnt have to keep repeating himself over and over. Loading... It has to be a society in which a system was set up so poorer people or people with fewer means could have a fair chance to education, to upward mobility, or jobs that provide some kind of decent wages, without this basic infrastructure or societal system, no matter how hard one work or focus on the present moment one could not overcome their circumstance. Log in to Reply Al R says: April 11, 2020 at 8:26 pm I have really enjoyed and learned from this series, and appreciate what Oprah and Tolle are collectively trying to do. I respect both of them in many different ways, but like all people with the ability to think critically, I feel the following needs to be said. Oprah is a bit reminiscent of the obnoxious friend who hosts parties with the most interesting people, so you attend for that reason. I say this because, throughout the 9 episodes (I have not seen the last) Oprah takes it upon herself to offer "tough love without the love" (a la Dr. Phil who has one of the most exploitative daytime TV shows today) to so many of the interesting callers who are already doing the world a service by being vulnerable and honest in a public forum. She seems to enjoy dissecting each one of them and readily telling them how they are going about life all wrong, are governed by ego, but she evades all criticism herself. Take for example, Tolle says at one point, in essence, that television should be kept to a minimum, but in order to spare Oprah's ego, he chides "except for the Oprah Winfrey show" and goes on to discuss how the content is elevated, however, much of the Oprah show (while it was on) was focused on celebrity culture/interviews, material object giveaways, cruel Dr. Phil taking pleasure in insulting and disparaging fragile individuals who were brave enough to call in, etc. During this series, instead of letting Eckhart provide explanations for his own book, she repeatedly offers her own take without calling it that. She'll say "what he means is this…" which in and of itself is a self-righteous act. In another episode, Eckhart says "some people don't like Oprah, though I don't know why…" again, protecting her ego, and she goes on to playfully say "I don't know why either?" demonstrating a complete and utter lack of comfort with the fact that she too, may be disliked by some, which again is rooted in ego. She also dismisses the everyday concerns that people have of financial burdens, health, etc. and often dismisses the feelings of people who have genuine personality traits (i.e. the woman from the Netherlands a few episodes back who is highly sensitive, which by the way is a veritable personality type, long ago accepted by the psychological community and considered the foundation of so many kind, creative, noble, just individuals such as Emily Dickinson, Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein, amongst others, but Oprah is far too ignorant, insensitive and wrapped up in ego herself to know this). It's easy for someone who owns something like 5 homes valued at several hundred million dollars to act as if all obstacles can be overcome by the blink of an eye, or that anorexia is just self-indulgence, but for the person who is going through their day to day reality, that pain, the tough-guns "laugh in their face" approach only belittles and shames said person, it does not help them heal. What helps people heal is to be a good, present, loving, honest listener and to withhold judgment, gently providing insight when the time is right coming from a place of love, never from a desire to be "right" or a know it all. It's too easy to say "oh, that's your ego at work" when that may be partially true, it only leads to more shame, hurt and alienation. As for the woman who expects an apology, so long as she communicates her intentions clearly, that is OK too if it's rooted in a place of wanting to have mutual respect and courtesy between friends or loved ones. In fact, that can be a very important part of your close relationships, and if that is something you give freely, it is absolutely fine to align yourself with people who share your values so your needs are met. In fact, it is essential. Oprah's continuous shaming of ordinary individuals juxtaposed with complete "washing away" of the self-awareness that she readily criticizes others for allegedly not having is off-putting to say the least. It sickens me a bit when she tells others not to have attachments to things when Oprah is a poster-child for material excess. No one needs that many houses or things. This excessive nature can even be observed by her own struggles with regulating food intake, and her attachment to things illustrated by a comment like "I told Tom Cruise, "no matter what, you'll always have this beautiful house to come home to."" She's not perfect and I wish she could show that humility in this series, of all places. Eckhart on the other hand is a kind and sensible soul with a lot of wisdom to share. I really just wish that Oprah would have held her tongue a little more during this series and that Eckhart didn't feel the need to constantly inflate her. She has overcome so much hardship in her life, but that does not give her the right to step on those smaller than her and slap them with "in your face" criticisms, especially not when she's trying to promote awakening and consciousness. It is truly counterproductive. Personally, I learn more from the marginalized and common people that I speak to everyday than I do from someone sitting on a throne. Again, I think Oprah has done much good with this series and in her career (especially what she's doing more recently and very early in her talk show career) but it's important to hold those who are public figures or in positions of power accountable for their words and deeds, as they are often the people we are looking to for guidance, and like all humans, none of them are perfect, possibly even more imperfect than the common woman/man as power can be a very corrupting force. Oprah – it's time for you to wake up in addition to "awakening". Loading... Log in to Reply Duaine Murtoff Project Dragonfly says: April 11, 2020 at 8:26 pm For Gwen and Bob – Jesus taught the disciples this prayer.Thy( Gods) kingdom come, thy ( Gods) will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Heaven has always been the model for us to replicate here on earth. How do we do that? By first recognizing we cannot, as long as we hold onto our ego = mans need to protect himself. ( fear based behavior) God is love, love is the opposite of fear. The truth is that these things have always been in the scriptures. We may or may not have understood them. Matt 11:15 " Let him how has ears ,let him hear". Jesus taught that the 2 most important commandments Luke 10:27-The man answered, "'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' And, 'Love your neighbor as yourself. If you can't let God love you , you can't love yourself. It all starts with his love for us and when we love ourselves we can love others. When we love others we honor the presents of God in them. We must first recognise it is impossible to do this unless we drop our egos and then allow God to flow though us. Matt 16:25 "For anyone who keeps his life (ego) for himself shall lose it, and anyone who loses his life (ego) for my sake shall find it". The Bible is full of teachings that help open us up to our own inadequacy, and force us to rely on something bigger then our selves. We have to drop our "ego, flesh, world, fear" so we can see what has always been the truth, and will always be. John 17:22-26 " 26= and i have revealed you to them, and will keep on revealing you so that the mighty love you have for me may be in them, and I in them. We were meant to be loved by God and allow him to flow through us. The Bible also says take every thought captive 2 Cor 10:5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Remembering that God is love, and that Christ freely gave his life to prove we are loved, he gave his life for us ,people controlled by their ego Luke 23:24 "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." We all killed him and or would have because the ego will defend its self. We believe we need our defense mechanism to live in this world rather, then trusting God that he has always loved us and had our best interest at heart. All that to say, christians can get upset over the word evolution all they want, the truth is its all right there. After all says 2 peter 3:8 "One day with the Lord is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day" If thats the hill a person wants to die on there missing the point. Known of this stuff can be understood with the mind anyway. Its part of the problem. The heart has to be ready to receive it. Loading... Log in to Reply 5shan10 says: April 11, 2020 at 8:26 pm Re Gwen's question (Gwen and Bob), when someone does wrong to me I no longer expect an apology ('appropriate' or otherwise). It does not matter to me any more. Trying to shake the incidence off like the two ducks will take a little more time and practice, however. But does this mean I don't care? Have I become so insensitive that it does not matter to me whether they apologise or not after having done the wrong to me? Is that my ego too? Excellent series. Thank you Oprah, as always!
